I have always had a love of all types of art throughout my life. When I was 15 years old I met a very nice lady named Karen through a mutual friend. She was a cake decorator in Wasilla, Alaska. I initially started baby sitting for her, but once I saw the cakes she made, how pretty they were and what an art form it was to be able to decorate them,  I knew I wanted to learn how to do that.   Not only were her cakes beautiful, they resonated with the part of me that loves art. So I went to Karen one day and asked if we could work out a deal where we could trade baby sitting for cake decorating lessons.  Once I had started taking classes from her, I new that I loved decorating.  I worked with Karen learning the basic techniques for several months.  During which time I hired her to make the cake for my parents 25th Wedding Anniversary

Once I had a pretty good understanding of the basics, I started making cakes and selling them at school to friends. I had started making cakes for the special occasions at our house; where possible I would make cakes for school projects. I was really enjoying making and decorating cakes, and then in January of 1991 my dad passed away. When he died it altered my world dramatically.

Through the years I would think about and talk about wanting to get back into cake decorating, but due to work and life it was not possible until June of 2008 when I was laid off from my job.

I was looking for something to keep my time filled.  One day while my husband James and I were out and about we stopped by a crafts store just to look around. I noticed the classes they were offering.  James looked at me and said “Take the class.  You have been talking off and on about getting back into decorating for years.”  I signed up for the first class, a refresher; I was amazed once I started the class how easy everything I had learned years before just came flooding back to me.  That refresher class made me realizes just how much I love cake decorating, Barbara, our instructor became one of my best friends and my mentor.  After the first refresher class I took 4 more classes with Barbara.  She helped me, encouraged me and  answered any questions I had about different techniques.  She encouraged me to work hard, to advance my skills and be proud of my accomplishments.  So I have been working and decorating cakes solidly for the last two years now.  In March of 2010 I entered the San Diego Cake show; this is the largest judged cake show in the west coast. I am proud to say that I took 1st place in the Foreign Techniques Tiered Division.  I have found my passion in life; it is to make people happy and to see them smile when they see the cake I have created just for them and their occasion.  I love making art out of sugar and flour.
